View Full Version : Dxva & Windows 7
Hey,
I'm not a frequent visitor of this forum. I made a thorough search to make sure I'm not one of many with the same question but I'm sure alot has already been said on this topic.
I've been using KMplayer for quite a long while now, never had any trouble and could get the player to use Dxva via Cyberlink's PowerDVD codec. Ofcourse, therefor I had to have the entire program installed and also noticed it came with its own bunch of startup services.
Now I have a fresh and shiny Windows 7 installed and am wondering how to get Dxva to work with Kmplayer again. This time hoping I could maybe skip installing PowerDVD and get some standalone codecs to do the job.
So my questions are:
-What is the cleanest and easiest way to get KMplayer to use Dxva (Nvidia's PureVideo) on Windows 7?
-Do I need the Gefore Drivers from Nvidia's site to enable PureVideo acceleration or will the drivers that came with Win7 work aswell?
Finally, I've seen some Win7 Codecs Pack out there and really question their reliance and effectiveness. Anyone who has experience with them?
Thanks in advance!

You can use Nvidia Purevideo with DxVA, or CoreAVC with CUDA - I think latter is better.
Maybe Windows 7 default driver will cope with DxVA and CUDA. :)
I know that much ;D but thanks for your reply.
I am actually looking for a way to enable DxVA for files that previously used the Cyberlink Codec, but without having to install a 150MB application that I hardly use except for its codecs for KMplayer.
I found the loose .ax Cyberlink codec-file and it let me tick the DxVA box like it used to, but it's never used for any type of file, even if it's set as the primary decoder to use for the files I'm trying to play.
EDIT: Using a forumtopic I found here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) I've tried using MPC-HC and its codec "mpcvideodec.ax" and checking the settings with a W7DSFilter Tweaker I managed to set this filter as a standard for a number of files. This filter now loads in MPC but without DxVA. In KMplayer this filter won't even load in KMplayer and refuses to use DxVA.

use "SuperSpeed Mode" and EVR (C/A) video renderer... ;)
use "SuperSpeed Mode" and EVR (C/A) video renderer... ;)
Tried this! Only made things look more cr@ppier. I can recall when I played the same files in XP using Cyberlink's codec (which is using Purevideo) with crisp quality and no corrupted textures when I added a sharpen filter to it.
I apreciate your reply. But so far I can't get this thing to work. What you both suggested were the first things I tried. Kmplayer just uses its internal decoders and as far as I can see, 720p movies just displays in regular DVD quality.

did you uncheck the internal video decoders for h.264 and avc-1? and check the four cc tick in video processing tab? also did you set kmplayer to use the codec you want it to use in external codecs? that should be all that has to be done.

Win 7 RTM (build 7600) has a significantly improved h.264 codec (MS dtv decoder) and I've found it to be as good as MPC-HC. So try using that.

Win7codecs is an audio and video codec package for Windows 7. The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.
It does not contain a media player and it does not associate file-types. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play all movies and video clips. Streaming video is supported in several formats in all popular web browsers. Users of the Win7codecs have the ability to choose what is installed and where to install it using the public redistributable. After installation you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. You can also re-add the removed items at any time.
Win7codecs 1.2.3 Final
- update ffdshow to rev 3036
- update gabests splitters to rev 1179
- updater Musepack support for sv8 streams
- add MediaInfo interface to the Settings Application
- allow the file renderer to open All Files
- disable installation onto unsupported systems

here is a thread to easily enable dxva in kmplayer: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
only the mpc (mediaplayerclassic)-decoder is needed. Then DXVA-Acceleration for the most important decoders is working (i.e. VC1, DivX, XviD, H264, etc)
