Some really great tools have become available the last couple of years. Browsing for a media player solution has never been easier. This wikipedia page ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) did it for me. :)

I frequently check the pages @ portablefreeware.com and there I found an entry about this program, a long time ago... But, only recently I decided to give KMPlayer a chance, since I didn't like subtitle rendering in VLC (ever since I started using it)... And I was pleasantly surprised... Well, that's my story... :)

I found a wrong information from the description of kmp at portablefreeware.com. The player supports unicode basically.

Unicode support: No

Writes settings to: Application folder. You have to bring up the "Preferences" window, click on "General", then check "Store Settings to KMPcfg.ini".

I don't recommend to do this if not for portable, it'll cause an unpleasant delay on launching the player because of the tons of option. :p

ps. Ahhh, forgot that the site treats a portable thing. :p

I dont quite remember where I found about KMP. It was long time ago (maybe 2-3 years :p ). At that time, I tried nearly all video players...always searching for the best one. I first liked mv2player, but its development was discontinued. Later my favourite was Zoomplayer , then MPC.
When I first found KMP, on a download site - I dont remember which, I was amazed...I loved KMP, but I had subtitle problems. So I dropped KMP and returned months later. The subtitle problem was still there...I wasnt so lazy this time and asked for help in the forum (the problem was quite simple - changing the Charset :p ).
Since then, I am a member of this forum and I enjoy using KMP.
And the lived happily ever after :D

Hi! I am from Badajoz, Spain.

I found The KMPlayer as other users did... looking for the perfect video player. The first time I saw it was in Softonic.com, software web page in Spanish ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) Recently, they have written a review in which KMPlayer is said to look very much alike BSPlayer  .

The first time, I tried it but it was in English, and it seemed a little complicated to use... Then I tried BSPlayer, ZoomPlayer and so on (install-uninstall madness).

Finally, I decided to stay with KMP, translate it into Spanish and use it for watching all my videos and DVDs... and I always recommend it to my friends.

I googled something like media player + built in codecs, and voilá!!

I was looking for a player that didn't required external codecs, and kmplayer proved to be that and so much more.

I think this media player is perfect, everysingle feature anyone could want is already there!

The only single thing I'd like to see improved is the startup time! BSPlayer is faster, but apart from that kmplayer beats them all!

And how did you know KMP, Z?
It was almost 5 years ago (2002) to know KMP. I was finding a media player to be replaceable for Sasami2k. And I'd heard that there was a good alternative for a video player. What attracted my attention strongly was that he who developed the player had been a very famous developer for his K-utility series. (K=Kang :p) It was very powerful and similar to Norton Utilities. (I was the faithful user of Norton Commander too.)

You may know the story in other article. That's the reason why I tried the player.

And how did I know KMP ? Thanks Mister GEO TROUVETOUT from this Site

Hi,

I'm from Poland, Cracow
First I read some post about KMPlayer. Before this I saw him on the site with programs. I downloaded to try and... it's great. I looking for that player. First at the end of 1999 I'm using microdvd player. Second I use BSPlayer and it was pretty good. Third one were Media Player Classic. But KMP has great filter and plugins configuration. I always had problems with filters. e.g. to use xvid for decode xvid movies and divx for divx movies. In KMP there is no more problems with codecs. Thanks as lot and keep development this great player.

a few ago, i read at wiki... i compare many media players... i choose mplayer, kmplayer, kplayer, vlc, xbcn, v##, and cccp as top dogs but i narrow to one spot.

i usually use vlc as primary and cccp as secondary because of subtitle problems.

kplayer solves all subtitle problem... but will play with it for different levels of enjoying.

cccp is a decoder pack and not a player (it includes ZoomPlayer and Media Player Classic as players).

HI All!
One year ago, I known KLP from a member of S.E.S forum. At that time, KLP used many RAM and consumed CPU terriblely. So I only use it within 1h :D. I used MPC after.
A 4 days ago, I went to [Only registered and activated users can see links] I intended to download a new version of K-lite and some... I tried to use KLP again and I soooooo surprising! Oh! Terrible!
KLP has more features than MPC:
- choose language subtitle
- Playlist editor
- prettier Skins
....
but A IMPORTANT FEATURE: KLP use as RAM, VIRTUAL MEMORY, consume CPU as MPC
Are author of KLP college student ?
I admire you!
Thank you! ko map sum ni ta!

Got my first version of The KMPlayer from 9down.com and it seems that my search for media players is stopped for a while. easily replaced MPC,vlc and winamp. so far so good, but there is one downside using this player - it realy starts to grind my gears when someone advises other people to use vlc as the ultimate, no-need-to-intall-codecs/it-playes-anything player (since i'm quite active in some It support related forums, it happens frequently) :)

Found you through the neowin.net forum ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) searching for a video player. Love the fact that KMPlayer can play both music files and video files both very good.

Previously I was using Foobar2000 ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) for music and Media Player Classic ([Only registered and activated users can see links])for video with the All In 1 Codec Pack.

Your name conflicts with KDE s name of their player ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) (Sorry don't know who was first)

I was looking for a lightweight player, that had the format versatility of WinAMP. I was browsing through Wikipedia for just that and I came across The KMPlayer, which could seemingly play every format I had. What's more, it could play all video formats including FLV, so it was irresistible. :D

I've spread it around to everyone I know ever since. It'samazing!

I have used KMP for the past 6-8 months. Before that I used MPC for about 2 years due to the lack of bloat (plus it's free). Every 2 months or so I have a look for a new media player as prior to MPC I used Zoom and miss the amount of configuration options. So far I haven't found anything to replace KMP, it simply is the best player for my needs.

I used winamp for years (since around 1998) but found it was lacking in some areas (mostly .avi's & .ram) so moved onto VLC till I heard about KMPlayer a couple years ago in a forum. I have only downloaded 1 update (now using 2.9.2.1100), and have not had any trouble with it for over a year. Very well done to the programmers.

Hi,

I found KMPlayer about 1 year (not sure have check first version in my old pc) but early I'm usualy using bsplayer and zoom player early.. of cource powerdvd is normal choice long time a go... I never real lika Win media so I never real like classic too...

But it's destiny when I some site KLplayer and then I use it allways.. I try sometimes another systems but allways I back good ol' KMP :) that is NOT ass kissing!

I Like IT and that it's! I hope that player live a long.. It's working very good old pentium 4 (never have problems), and now real good in my new core duo and now FINALLY I have to power to watch all kind *.mkv ect Real Good Pictures series and movies! It's so easy to use all codec is inside no install no nothing double click AND GO.. (of cource little first time setup SDIF/DTS ect)

I have many time problems another player watch all kind (codec) *.avi ect.. put KMP play it all... about 1 year in timeclass and I don't chance it. I really hope not in future (long time future) I still can use it :D

I wasn't satisfied with my current player... then I accidentally found a recommendation on a torrent site. I got curious, grabbed the KMPlayer and I've been happy with it ever since. So far it has got everything I need, and it shows all my files - something I cannot say about my former player.

first of all I'd like to say the player is great.

I need good+simple. I am no tekki, grrk or whatever. just a political activist who needs music for relaxation, and am sick of having a different player for each type of media. This seems great.

I found you on an anime-review of media players wiki! I do not know the first thing about 'anime', so i looked up the regular wiki page of 'media players'. I downloaded from "Download.com".

I do not know if I have the latest ver, but will find out - I imagine when something goes wrong and have to look around your great forum.

Hmm, lots of stories similar to mine, so I had to register so I could chime in too. :p

I'd been using VLC for years, when I went to search for a free player for DVDs. I just now installed KMP while I was looking up codecs on...Wikipedia! because for some reason VLC wasn't playing a DivX file (I've recently clean-installed Windows). I looked at the comparisons, googled some comparisons of the two players, and thought I'd try it out. I'm just about to, but I'm not very worried that it might not be better than VLC.

Also, while registering here a minute ago, I realized KMP is an anagram of my initials; that's a good omen! I like the idea of seeing all of my files, playing with pitch, a bunch of other features that I can't recall yet, and quite frankly, VLC is a bit depressing to look at--though I never bothered to skin it...

dzonis: Since I first downloaded VLC, I've been seeing that it's the...er, poop...for playing everything under the sun, too. I think all the converts here should set people straight by telling everyone how we switched!

pmpmac: Yeah, I was really sick of digging around for settings inside VideoLan, to. The first time I wanted to adjust the contrast/brightness/etc., I spent close to an hour trying to find the damn extended GUI, then I forgot where it was a few more times...I didn't even remember what it was called. I eventually remembered, and then, more eventually, found it in the drop-down list, but god, all the settings are scattered in stupid places with ambiguous names. What a pain!

That reminds me, can you see the adjusting of video settings while the video is paused in KMP, or do you have to guess, play, pause, readjust, play, pause, reajust...and repeat until you bite your mouse in half, punch your monitor, and have to go to the pub for a couple of hours?

I suppose it might be a limit of the video's compression, but I'm sure I've done it while paused in another program...actually, I think it was WMP!

Well, I'm about to find out, I guess, and it wouldn't be like I'd be losing a feature I used to have!

Thanks for the player, z, it always blows me away when someone makes excellent programs and decides to share them as freeware. Like that Irfanview guy before he started pushing Google Desktop. :)

Cheers!

Greetings frm Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) to ALL!
Well, as for myself, I am a movie-freaker and, by being such, I've been using all kinds of players. During my *eternal search* for a really nice player, I bumped onto KLMPlayer and let me tell ya this, KLMPlayer is, if not the best, the one I was able to find until now.

Well i've always had troubles with other players. I had been using BSplayer for some time, because of its handy subtitle options, but there were always files that couldn't be played (this is probably because i missed a few codecs, but i don't like to do all of that manually). Plus BSPlayer was quite slow and i still needed VLC to preview incomplete video's. I don't use VLC as my default player because of an annoying bug when displaying subtitles (can't pause) and because of its somewhat limited interface.

Then i switched to Zoom Player, because it detects and downloads the codecs it needs and has some great options, but this wasn't the answer to my playback problems (incomplete files, some mpegs, needs ffdshow for h264), plus it needs vobsub for subtitles and that's just not handy.

After a fresh Windows install i wanted to tackle these problems once and for all, so i went looking for a good player. I came across Media Player Classic and i thought i found the perfect player, but it still needed ffdshow for xvid/divx, it didn't play incomplete files and i got rendering problems with vmr7/9 renderless (needed for subtitles). So i went on looking.

I came across a great media player comparison ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) on Wikipedia so i just looked for a free player for Windows that supports all video and container format and incomplete files, subtitles and DVD. The only players left were Mplayer and The KMPlayer. I tried both. I just didn't like Mplayer so i took The KMPlayer. It's just the most complete player of all. It has the advantages of all the players i used before. It just needs some fine-tuning (some dvd's, some mov's, streaming, a few little bugs), but i think it has a great future.

For music i still use Winamp.

First of all, Greetings to you all !!

Well, like many people here, I am a videoholic and I like also music. My Pc has become a Video & music player along with a workstation.

I used to play videos with BsPlayer, MediaPlayer Classic or VLC. I used to switch between those 3 pieces of software in order to get a more comfortable experience with my videos. BSplayer was ok for me but I was always annoyed with finding Codecs to watch those videos. Mediaplayer Classic was a bit better than BS (at least for me), and VLC would be really interesting with its embedded video decoders (albeit with its own problems concerning subtitles).

One day I visited a site dedicated to Home Cinema and videoplayers tweaking to get the best experience, and I read something about Kmplayer. I got curious and visited the forums of Kmplayer. And got Hooked & Addicted..

To that nice piece of program.. And began talking my friends into trying it... It still has a few bugs but these will be solved and I am pretty sure that it will get better over time, but Kmplayer is to me one of the nicest videoplayer around... I even consider discarding Winamp in favor of Kmplayer to listen to Music...

Very nice Work, Mr. Z !!

I've been on a continuing and frustrating search for alternatives to WMP and RP. Winamp used to be the best, but no more. I have been using Media Player Classic which isn't bad but does have a few shortcomings. This past week I found a Wikipedia comparison of players, and KMPlayer stood out from all the rest. As soon as I installed it I knew KMP was what I have been looking for. Definitely warrants the description others have used--AWESOME! Does everything, and has more goodies than I will ever use.:)

Wikipedia. I was a BSPlayer user tired of errors; then, some days ago, looking the Wikipedia comparative between players I knew KMPlayer.

I downloaded, installed and LOVED it! The next day I found this forum and now I finished the translation to Brazilian Portuguese.

For music I use another player, AIMP, but to video? Just KM!

Hi, I am from New Zealand. I found KMP some months ago while searching for a solution to managing my 5000+ music videos of 20 different types. I use MediaMonkey for my 20,000+ mp3 collection. I stumbled upon MEXP (far from perfect) and from there it was just a short hop to KMP. I have previously tried MPC, BS, Zoom and all the others along with various codec packs (mainly k-lite). Always there would be some files that did not play or played incorrectly. While I still have my management problem, I am very grateful for having found the best video media player by far.

Just one little issue - sometimes when I have a quick look at a mov file, then try to close KMP it takes a long time to close (I have a very powerful PC).

So if anyone has a music video management solution that can produce playlists for and trigger KMP, please PM me.

Well, I'm one of addicted users of KMP. Reeeeeeeeeally like it. :)

Arguably the best software media player on the planet--and it's free.

After about 15 years of reviewing software, it's rare that I’m truly impressed with a program. But impressed I am with KM Player, a very cool little software audio/video player with an extraordinary array of built-in audio and video decoders. You'll have to install Real's player or the free RealMedia Alternative codec to play .rm, .rmvb, etc. files, but it supports nearly everything else natively including Quicktime formats.

With no external DirectShow CODECS installed, I ran the program through my usual battery of files and discs and the results were as follows:

Played
Video: VCD, SVCD, DVD, .avi, .wmv, .mov, Quicktime .mp4, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX, Xvid.
Audio: CD, .wav (up to 96kHz/32-bit!), .mp3, .ogg, Nero MP4, .wma, AAC, Apple Lossless, .ape, .flac

Didn't Play
Video: FLV, RealMedia types*, Blu-ray discs, HD DVD discs.
Audio: .VQF, RealMedia types*, SACD.

*After installing the free RealMedia Alternative 1.60, these played as well. The program supports more CODECs I didn’t test. In addition to the array of integrated decoders, KM Player will use any DirectShow CODECs you've installed and there are more playback options and A/V filters than you can shake a stick at. It even supports WDM devices like TV tuners and camcorders, though there's no record function. The interface is handsome, matching the default Vista look and efficient, even if the plethora of options can be daunting at times.

In my limited testing, KM Player was more stable than either or Media Player Classic, and it’s more versatile than even the new Vista Media Player. The interface is both handsome and efficient. I've only scratched the surface in this review, so download this puppy now. If it doesn't quickly become your favorite, I'll be surprised.

My story has a lot in common with others' route. In the search for the best and (very important) comfortable player I tried a dozen of progs.... and only calmed down with KM.

Well, it was a tough run, I was trying to find a player that doesn't need any single codec installed and I suffered searching till I found KMP, actually it's the best and I've been using it for a while, it plays at great audio quality, it played all my DvDs !!! and I'm totally satisfied.

I was using Zoom player and got frustrated with its unresponsiveness and went on a search for a new media player. I found about VLC and looked into it but didn't like the interface so I looked into other players and I read about the KMPlayer in a software forum I visit frequently and I remembered when I was visiting Korea many people used Gom player or the KMPlayer. So I decided to try the KMPlayer and am currently loving it.

Like many others, I chose to try The KMPlayer from the Wikipedia page "Comparison of Media Players".
I wanted something that I could try without spending a lot of time and without messing up the rest of my system. I wanted codec support without a lot of time reading what I should download, trial and error work, and hunting around, and risk of breaking something else. (I also use VLC and Media Player Classic.)

The KMPlayer is superior to others because of:
- Broad support for many codecs.
- Simplicity of installation and isolation from the rest of the system settings. Gives me the feeling it is safe to try.
- Simplicity of operation.
- Does not require adding to a library or a playlist first.
- Speed of operation, and ability to trade off quality and speed.
- Simple and powerful way to jump ahead and backwards, and alter playback speed. (The arrow keys feel intuitive and work very well. The mesage at the top reminding you what it just did is very helpful to learn what the keys do.)
- Simple subtitle support that works.
- Simple way to change some of the playback settings while it is playing. (Many videos I play have the aspect ratio set wrong and it is very easy to change it while playing.)
Simplicity and speed in software are hard work to achieve!
