Hello,

i dont know if this is a possible request or not because i dont know if some archive formats are able to have access "on the fly" without decompressing the whole file first but

I would love to have playback of compressed files.

I tried to compress some .vob files. ZIP is getting about 4-5% smaller file sizes but 7zip is getting about 10-20% smaller sizes! Thats a lot if a DVD has ~5GB of space.

But it dont have to be implemented in the way of decompressing the whole file to a temporary folder first. In that case it would take a lot of time before playback starts and it would stress your harddisk a lot.

I thought of something like this:

If you could add a cache of about 64MB or 128MB RAM and decompress the streaming of it on the fly this would be a great feature. As i know no player can do this at the moment. CPUs of today should be fast enough.

What do you think?

redfox750, please dont offend. Some people dont like lossy formats. And his post isnt really about a DVD, but about 7zip support.

@Redfox750, i dont know why you are so upset?

@all and mad: Your thought was right. Im talking about lossless compression.
Otherwise I would use x264 or something...
