i tried to open a .avi file with VirtuaDub v1.75, a message appeared:" Couldn't laocate decompressor for format "XVID" (unknown)

VirtuaDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, shuch as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?? I am a bit confuse that since i can play .avi files with kmp, why cant i edit .avi file with VirtuaDub?

Installing FFDShow ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) should fix your problem.

KMPlayer by default used internal decoder and can use external DirectShow decoders.

VirtualDub required VfW (video) and ACM (audio) codecs - cant's use DirectShow decoders (except - latest DS input plugin).

For VirtualDub You need install Xvid ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) codec or can use ffdshow VfW wrapper (activate Xvid support in ffdshow video encoder configuration > Decoder > Codecs).
