How to configure to select a preferred audio/subtitle stream?

The KMPlayer has the capability of automatically selecting the specified audio and subtitle streams of media files in preferences. You can specify a few initial characters of preferred languages appearing in the each stream switcher of audio and subtitle. It is also possible to specify a stream number to select automatically while starting playback.

You can specify the preferred languages sequentially signaling the priority of languages by separating each text string with "space (blank character)". KMP tries to find the matches in order and the first match will be selected as a preferred (audio/subtitle) language on play start.

Refer to the screenshot below.

ps. If there are external subtitles, the embedded subtitles (of MKV/MP4/OGM) will be overrided by default. Thus the specified settings of preferred languages will be only applied to the external subtitles.

e.g. Let's assume that there are embedded subtitles of "jpn.ssa, eng.ssa" in Sample.mkv and the preferred subtitle languages are specified as "jpn eng fre" in preferences; The selected subtitle would be "Sample.jpn.srt".
Sample.mkv
Sample.eng.srt
Sample.jpn.srt

Hello, I have a problem loading subtitles, this is what happens exactly:

The subtitles files are not in the same folder as the video, the ones that are named exactly like the video file are loaded, but the ones named like [video].eng.srt (just like in your example) do not get loaded.

I'm not using any external subtitle module, in the "preferred Subtitle language box" i hae written "Eng Esp". I'm using kmplayer version 2.9.3.1396

You are right. But it's by design.

KMP only recognizes the subtitle having the same filename as a movie file to play if the subtitles are not located in the same folder as the video.

If you want to load two subtitles in order as defined in "preferred subtitle language", all subtitles must have language tags between the subtitle's filename and extension. If there is a subtitle having the same name as a movie file, KMP will load it unconditionally.

It's because of SMI subtitles. SMI subtitles have a language class defined in the header of subtitle in order to make it possible to have multiple languages within one SMI subtitle.

How to automatically load 2nd subtitle?
Refer to the screenshot below. The attributes of the second subtitle such as font style, position and charset etc can be adjusted in each second tab in preferences / Subtitle Processing / Font Style and Alignment. If you have a trouble in displaying 2nd subtitle, there is an easy way to avoid the cracking characters. Save the subtitle as unicode and load it in KMP. Of course, you can simply change the charset of 2nd subtitle manually in preferences / subtitle processing / font style / 2nd subtitle tab / Charset.

The term "Integrated Subtitle" and "Language Class" used in the preferences of KMP means the structure of SMI which defines multiple languages as language classes within one smi subtitle file.

How to position 2nd subtitle?
http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7707

There are two ways.

1. Enable or load 2nd subtitle. And adjust the position of 2nd subtitle manually. It is upside down by default.

2. Process both subtitles as integrated subtitle. Carefully read the explanation described in preferences.
http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showp...27&postcount=7
When subtitles are processed in this way, there is a restriction to change the attributes of 2nd subtitle.

ETC
The option of 2nd screenshot below works only when subtitles are drawn to overlay/vmr surfaces.

To draw subtitles on overlay surface, Overlay Mixer must be used as a video renderer and the output method of subtitles must be selected to "draw to overlay surface" (Alt+R).

Similarly, to draw subtitles on VMR surface, VMR9 Renderless must be used as a video renderer and the output method of subtitles must be selected to "draw to VMR surface". (Alt+V)

Video renderers can be selected in preferences / video processing / renderer tab. Subtitle's output methods can be selected in preferences / subtitle processing or you can use the following hotkeys. By default, KMP draws subtitles on image itself which requires KMP video transform filter. The rest two methods do not require KMP video transform filter.

Alt+R: Draw to Overlay Surface
Alt+M: Draw to Image Itself (default) - Theater mode
Alt+V: Draw to VMR Surface - Clone mode

The default setting of drawing subtitle is for TV-OUT (Theater mode). The term of Theater and Clone comes from ATI control panel (See 3rd screenshot below). On ATI graphic cards, there was an option called "theater mode" for TV-OUT, which caused any video overlay being played on the primary monitor to display in fullscreen on the second monitor (TV). If you want to force the subtitles to display at bottom of screen in Theater mode, KMP video transform filter is required to make a room for subtitles. There are two ways to achieve the purpose. The first method is actually a part of the second.

1. F3: Make a bottom margin for subtitle (Right click on KMP / Subtitles / Bottom Margin)
2. Ctrl+Q: Screen Offset (Right clikc on KMP / Pan & Scan)

The F3 function still works without KMP video transform filter but it does not add physical pixels to video image. For more information, there is an explanation in the dialog of screen offset (Ctrl+Q).
