#1 | Link | VLC Workaround for Playback of Blu-Ray Movies Found, Posted 05-30-2008 Quote
Hello,

On the (German-language) webpage

[External URL submitted by user - Login required] ,

I have found a possibility for VLC users to access movies on Blu-ray discs. Here is a short summary in English:

*

With AnyDVD-HD, VLC can access Blu-ray discs. The movie on the disc is in an M2TS container and has a structure similar to the one of a transportation stream of digital television. This is why VLC can open it. If it works, it will play the video, because there are free decoders available for all three formats, AVC, VC-1, and MPEG2.

There are no free decoders for the new audio formats such as DTS-HD. Exception: A Dolby-Digital-Plus filter for the FFmpeg codec collection is being developed, but it is only suitable for coding experts.

It is not possible to accesss menus and specials of the Blu-ray disc. To do so, a filter would be necessary.

*

My questions:

1. Has anyone already been successful in accessing Blu-ray movies in the way described above (I have no Blu-ray equipment, so I cannot test it myself)?

2. Would it be possible to do that with KMP, too, or add this possibility to KMP?

Many greetings,

A Friend

I like this. I don't have a blu-ray drive or disc, but someday I'll have
Thanks for your work.

Yes this is true. VLC can play m2ts files. AnyDVD breaks the protection when you insert the Blu-Ray. You can browse to the Stream Folder of the Blu-Ray and play the appropriate m2ts file directly.

Hello, socal500,

Welcome to the KMP Forum and thank you very much for your answer. Could you also please test whether KMP can access .M2TS files, too? And, if you have Blu-rays from different BD Regions, do they play with VLC and KMP?

Now that we have BD workarounds for VLC and MPC (the one for MPC is described in another thread), it should also be possible for KMP to read this format--or at least, it should be possible soon.

Many greetings,

A Friend

Tried with AnyDVD 6.5.9.5 VLC was very broken. KMP was better but video lagged more and more behind the video. Very weird experience.

This was on a Windows 7 laptop with external Philips USB Blu Ray drive
